People often ask, who makes Cabelas rangefinders?
Let’s find out!
Who Makes Cabelas Rangefinders?
Cabela’s is a well-known name in the outdoor industry. They are one of the largest retailers of hunting and fishing equipment, clothing, camping gear, and other outdoor products. Cabela Rangefinders are a part of their product line.
Cabela’s Intensity 1600 Laser Rangefinder
A good GPS device can measure distances quickly and accurately. The Intensity 1600 has both features.
Knowing your true horizontal range can be critical if you’re hunting steep terrain. How does this affect the horizontal range of your bullets or arrows? Basically, the effects of gravity on your bullets or arrows affect their horizontal ranges, not the line-to-target distances.
For example, if a hunter were to shoot uphill at an extreme slope, a 450-yard line of sight would be farther than the actual horizontal range. At shorter distances, knowing your horizontal range is not as crucial. However, at longer distances and steep slopes, knowing your horizontal range can make a difference.
True Horizontal Distance for Bowhunting
For bowhunting purposes, knowing the true horizontal angle can be important. We used an Intensity 1600 laser rangefinder for testing.
When you shoot an arrow at a target, knowing the actual distance that gravity affects your arrow is a huge advantage when you’re shooting a game on steep terrain.
Instead of guessing at the steep-angled adjustments, you need when shooting in the heat of the action, Cabela’s Intensity 1600 Laser Range Finder lets you know exactly where you need to be.
The five-point buck I harvested on public lands this year entered at only twenty-two yards with a slight uphill angle. For that take, we didn’t need the true horizontal distance reading. Before this buck, however, we have been ranging two other bucks on very steep slopes.
Our appreciation for the true horizontal distance readings of the Cabela’s intensity 1600 increased greatly before I took my final shot on that buck.
When you’re hunting from a stand or high tree stand, we always recommend rangefinder models that measure true horizontal distance. That helps you avoid guessing or estimating distances and risks a bad shot.

Intensity 1600 Rangefinder: The Specs
The Cabela’s Intensity 1600 Laser Range Finder is fast, providing up to. 25-second response times. Of course, it ranges larger, more reflected objects faster than smaller, vague objects.
A large tree trunk might have a near-instant read while a small shrub might take a little longer. In addition, holding a range finder steady when you’re ranging further out can be difficult.
These reflectors are designed for outdoor hunting. According to Cabela’s, they’re good for ranging deer up to 650 yards from you. My own experience has been that they’re fairly accurate at that distance.
The 6x 25 lens system has anti-reflective coatings and provides excellent image quality. Other competing rangefinder cameras have lenses ranging from 18-22 millimeters. The larger 25-millimeter lens allows in more light, which results in brighter, clearer images.
There are three reticles available for you to use: a plus sign, a segmented ring, or a crosshair.
The frame is made from a durable aluminum alloy and has a rubberized coating for extra durability and traction. It weighs 7.5 oz.
The intensity 1600 takes a CR2–3V lithium-ion rechargeable battery that should last for about 10,000 measurements (less in cold environments) when the batteries run out, the screen illuminates a “low battery” message, at which point we’ll give you about 250 more measurements.
Usage
The Cabela’s Intensity 1600 Laser Range Finder first provides an instant line-of-sight measurement at the top of the screen, followed by an accurate true horizontal distance measurement at the bottom of the screen.
If you’re struggling to find your target, one handy trick is to switch to Scanning Range Finder (SRF) view. Just press the shutter button halfway down for three seconds and then move the camera around until you get four readings per frame. That should help you pinpoint where your subject is hiding.
If you want to know the true horizontal distance from the Intensity 1600, you can set its settings so that it displays that information automatically. However, if you prefer to see the distance using an alternate method, you can choose one of two options.
Competitive Options & Alternatives
There are many great low-cost laser rangefinders available today. We suggest rangefinders that provide both LOS (or “true”) distances as well as HAT (or “horizontal angle” or “steep angle”) distances for steep-angle ranging if you’re interested in the Intensity 1600 Laser Range Finder from Cabela’s. Here are some other good choices:
The Vortex Impact 1,000 is a no-frill, basic, inexpensive, easy-to-use, and reliable scope that’s perfect for tree stand hunters and short-distance rifle shooting. It has a lifetime replacement guarantee if you break it.
The new Leopold RX-1400I packs a lot of mid-level ranging features into an entry-level price tag. It works great in bow mode for archery hunting, and for rifles, it allows you to pick a cartridge group to shoot at different angles. Conclusion
It’s an excellent entry-level to mid-range rangefinder for the cost. It’s fast, ranges, as well as competitors, deliver crisp images, and it offers true horizontal ranging.
