How Do I Identify a Canon Rangefinder Model?
There are many models of the Canon rangefinder on the market. But to identify the model you need to look for the serial number that may be located on the top, front, or bottom of the rangefinder.
You can also search your rangefinder’s model by searching its serial number online.
The Canon rangefinder camera was first introduced in 1954 as the Canon AF-1. This model had a fixed lens and a fixed focal length of 35mm (35mm film equivalent).
In 1959 the Canon AF-2 was introduced. This model had a zoom lens and a variable focal length of 50mm.
In 1961 the Canon AF-3 was introduced. This model also had a zoom lens but a fixed focal length of 75mm. In 1964 the Canon AF-4 was introduced. This model again had a zoom lens and fixed focal length of 100mm.

In 1966 the Canon AF-5 was introduced. This model still had a zoom lens but now had a fixed focal length of 135mm.

Is there a Model Name on the Camera?
Some of the later Canon rangefinder cameras have the model name on the top plate, front or bottom.
Serial numbers range from 1-1000000000. This is because there were many different variations of cameras produced by Canon. Some had serial numbers starting at 1 while others started at 1000000001. Some cameras did not have any serial numbers.

How Do I Identify a Canon Rangefinder Model?
Early Canon Rangefinders
Canon EF lenses with a 135mm F/4 lens, a 28mm F/3.5 lens, and an 85mm F/1.9 lens.
These three lenses were used by the photographer to take pictures of the scene. The camera was set up with a tripod.
The camera had a flash attached to the body. A round knob on the front part of the body allowed the photographer to adjust the shutter speed.

Conclusion
Today, the Canon 7 is eminently usable and has advantages over a Leica M body, especially if you want to use an f1.8 lens. A damaged shutter curtain won’t stop you from using your camera. But if you need a working meter, then the Canon 7 will be hard to beat.
