Step 2: A photon passes through the objective lens into the image intensifier tube. This is converted into electrons.

Step 3: These electrons then move through the second part of the tube, the electron multiplier. Here, the electrons collide with atoms of the metal coating the inside of the tube.

Step 4: When this occurs, the electrons gain energy and become more energetic. The electrons then exit the tube as high-energy photons.

Step 5: The newly created electrons flow into the second half of the vacuum tube, the microchannel plate (MCF). The MCF is a small glass disc that multiplies the number of electrons, thus amplifying them thousands of times over.

Step 6: As the new electrons exit the end of this tube, they hit a phosphor-coated screen. The phosphors light up when hit, making a glowing green image that’s much brighter than the original dim light entering the objective lens.

Step 7: You see the phosphor image through your eye, focusing and magnifying it as needed.

Why isn’t this traditional night vision image in color?

It’s because the photons aren’t converted into electrons, but instead into an electrical signal. This means that the color information is left intact, and the image is still in color. Green phosphors were chosen because green is the easiest to see in the dark.
