All daylight cameras, nighttime vision equipment, and the human eye use the same basic principal: Visible light energy hits something and reflects off it, a detector receives it and converts it into an electrical signal.

Night vision devices have similar limitations as daytime and low-light television cameras: They require sufficient illumination and adequate contrast for good image quality.
