Leica M11 Rangefinder

The Leica M11 (2012) is a digital rangefinder camera made by the German manufacturer Leica Camera AG. Introduced in September 2012, it replaces the Leica M10 as Leica’s flagship product.

The M11 has a 24-megapixel CMOS sensor, allowing for smaller lens sizes than those found on full-frame models. The M11 also includes Wi-Fi connectivity and Near Field Communication (NFC).

Features

The new Leica M11 camera has a newly developed Digic 4+ image processing chip that offers high performance and low power usage.

The DIGIC 5+ features twice as many processing units as its predecessor, which allows the camera to handle multiple RAW formats at once.

The DIGI X Pro has an improved 12MP APS‑C CMOS sensor with ISO sensitivity settings from 100 to 25600, plus a new EXPEED 3 processor for fast performance. It records at up to 10 fps in continuous AF/AE tracking mode with full resolution.

The Leica M11 camera features an improved autofocusing system that uses contrast detection technology for fast focusing even when shooting with a lens with a longer focal length. It can shoot at a distance of up to two meters.

Leica M11is an interchangeable lens digital compact system camera featuring a new image processing chip and improved connectivity.

While retaining its familiar design, the Leica M11 features a redesigned image processing chip and improved functionality.

Full-Frame BSI CMOS Sensor

The camera’s physical features include an improved ultra-thin dual-layer film, which filters out UV and infrared light for clearer images and better color accuracy.

Triple Resolution Technology

Triple-resolution technology lets the camera shoot three times better images than conventional cameras, so you can get sharp shots even when shooting under low light conditions.

0.73x Magnification Viewfinder

With a magnification ratio of 0.73x, you get a clear view of your subjects, even when they’re far away.

60MP: 14 stops of dynamic range, highest resolution

36MP: 15 stops of dynamic range, the best balance of resolution and noise

18MP: 15 stops of dynamic range, lowest noise levels

Imaging Improvements

Now, an electronic shutter allows you to shoot at shutter speeds up to one-sixteenth of a second (1/16,000), which is perfect for working fast with f/0.9 lenses without needing any ND filter. A mechanical shutter still supports shutter speeds up to four seconds (1/4,000) and flash sync at one-eighty seconds (1/180).

Two digital zoom steps can simulate working with longer focal length lenses by cropping into the image slightly, at 1.3x (39MP) and 1.8x (18MP) levels. These are reversible crops when recording a DNG or permanent crops if shooting straight to JPG.

Multi-field exposure metering is available in addition to spot and center-weighted average, which helps reduce the need to meter and then re-compose before shooting.

Long Exposure Noise Reduction helps to reduce the appearance of noise but can also be disabled for faster saving times.

Traditional Rangefinder Design

Optical Viewfinder and Rear LCD

The optical viewfinder has a magnification of 0.73 times, an automatic parallactic correction function, and bright-line framing lines that are adjusted to match the image sensor’s size at a focus distance of 6.6″.

On the back of the lens, a viewfinder frame selector can be found which allows manual adjustment of the apparent size of the subject by changing the focal length. Options include 35mm/135mm (35mm full format), 28mm/90mm (28mm full format) and 50mm/75m (50mm full format).

The new rear 2.95” 2.3m-dots display has been redesigned to be brighter for better visibility in bright sunlight.

The new menu system makes it easier to navigate through menus and change settings quickly.

Live View Stabilizer (LVS) helps reduce the appearance of blur caused by hand movement when shooting videos with long focal lengths. It works by detecting the position of the subject and compensating for any unwanted movements.

Updated Body Design and Handling

This stainless steel silver chrome edition of the M11 has a traditional bronze top cover. It weighs about 20 percent more than the black edition, which has an aluminum top cover, and weighs 1.5 pounds when fully assembled.

The first mirrorless camera without a removable base plate; instead, the M1 borrows a design from the Q system and features a new BP-SLC7 battery that is inserted into the base of the body.

Lithium-ion batteries from Canon have increased their capacity by 64%, but they’re rated for only 700 images per full recharge. If you use the optical viewfinder only (not the electronic viewfinder), however, you can shoot up to 1,700 images before needing to recharge.

The new version has an additional SD memory card slot inside the main body of the camera.

With built-in 64GB of internal flash, you can store everything you need without needing to carry around extra cards. You can even transfer images from the internal flash to an SD or MicroSD slot if you want to back up your photos.

A USB Type C connector on the bottom allows for in-camera battery charging. It also supports file transfers.

Wired and Wireless Connectivity

With the included FOTOS cable, you can attach it directly to an Apple iPhone using the Leica FOTOS app. It makes file management and sharing easier than ever before.

You can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to connect the camera to an iPhone or iPad using the FOTOS app (iOS).

You can add location tags to photos taken using your camera phone.
