Folding rangefinder cameras like the Kodak Retin and the Zeiss Conta were very popular during the 50s.

Epson RD Zenit M and PIXII

Digital rangefinder cameras were introduced in 2004 with the Epson R-d1. These cameras used Leica M-mount lenses. Later models included the R-D2 and R-D3.

Only Leica M digital rangefinder cameras were produced after the discontinuation of the discontinued R-D1. A new rangefinder was introduced by the French company Pixii SAS. The re-emerging Russian camera manufacturer Zenit released a limited edition Zenit M.

Leica M

The Leica M8 was released in 2006. This camera lacks many features that are common with today’s cameras.

Leica M Monochrom is a camera that shoots in black and white. It was released by Leica in 2014.

Viewfinder parallax

A rangefinder camera is an optical device used to take pictures. The viewfinder is offset from the lens so that the image seen by the photographer is not exactly what will appear in the film. This parallax error is noticeable when taking photographs at long distances but is insignificant when photographing subjects at short distances. When using a rangefinder camera, the photographer must focus the lens manually.

A rangefinder camera projects a bright-line frame around the image in the viewfinder. This frame adjusts for parallax error as you focus the lens. The angle of view changes with distance, so the bright-line frame automatically adjusts for this too.

Size form factor and mechanics

Rangefinder cameras are smaller than DSLRs. But if you want to get closer to your subject, you need an SLR.

SLRs use a mirror and a prism. Rangefinders use an aperture and a shutter.

The mirrorless camera doesn’t require a mirror, so it can be much smaller than a traditional SLR. This makes the lenses smaller as well. A mirrorless camera can fit more lenses in the same space as a traditional SLR.

Rangefinder cameras usually have smaller lenses. There is a greater sense of balance when using them because the lens doesn’t feel heavy. Smaller lenses allow the camera and extra lenses to be stored more easily.

Reduced camera noise

Rangefinders are discreet because they lack a mirror box. Leaf shutters are used instead of mirrors. These shutter mechanisms are usually silent. In this example, the camera is almost completely silent when taking pictures.

Reduced camera shake

Rangefinders have shorter lenses than SLRs and therefore allow you to take pictures at slower shutter speeds without introducing blur. Leaf shutters in rangefinders prevent blurring by moving the shutter blades out of the light path before exposing the film. Fixed-lens rangefinders do not use focal plane shutters, but instead, use leaf shutters. These shutters move the shutter blades out of focus, preventing blurring.

A leaf shutter inside the fixed-lens camera is a type of mechanical shutter used in some cameras. A focal-plane shutter is a type of electronic shutter used in some cameras, such as those made by Nikon.

No viewfinder blackout

Offset viewfinders do not cause a blackout when the shutter is fired. This means that the camera does not go black for a second or two while the shutter is firing. The blackout is very brief, and it is not noticeable.

Lenses framing and focusing

Rangefinder cameras with interchangeable lenses are very limited in terms of what you can do with them. You can change lenses but there are only a few types of lenses available.

A Canon P thread mount range-finder and Canonet Ql17 GLiii fixed lens rangfinder. The range of lenses suited for use on the more common 35 mm interchangeable lens rangefinder camera – at least without accessory viewfinder or adapters – spans from 21mm to135mm, and even this stretches the concept. This is because of the very nature of using an offset viewfinder for framing.

Offfset viewfinder

An offset viewfinder allows the photographer to see what he or she is taking pictures of without having to move the camera around. This type of viewfinder is used by most point-and-shoot cameras.

Frame lines in an offset viewfinder

Frame lines are visible when looking through an optical viewfinder. Wide-angle lenses make large frame lines inside the viewfinder. Longer lenses make smaller frame lines.

Camera lenses are made up of different sizes of glass. A lens with a larger diameter (or size) will let more light into the camera than a smaller lens. This means that a large lens will allow you to take pictures under low-light conditions. Lenses also come in different focal lengths. Wide-angle lenses are great for taking pictures of landscapes. But when using wide-angle lenses, there’s always distortion. Distortion makes your subject appear smaller than it really is.
