People often ask, why do rangefinder optics suck?
Let’s find out!
Why Do Rangefinder Optics Suck?
The most obvious limitation is that rangefinders can only measure the distance from one point in space to another. That means if you want to know what your target is doing, you need to be looking at them through the same lens as the rangefinder. If you don’t, then you won’t be able to tell what they’re doing.
The second problem with rangefinders is that they are very slow. They take time to focus and adjust to light conditions. This makes it difficult to shoot fast-moving targets or ones that move quickly.
Rangefinders also have a limited field of view. Most rangefinders will give you an approximate reading of up to about 100 yards. Beyond this distance, you’ll start losing accuracy.

Blue Tees Series 3 Max Rangefinder Review
The Blue Tees rangefinder line is a well-known brand in the UK. Their reputation for quality and reliability is well deserved, but are they worth buying?
Overall, it seems like Blue Tees was just one generation away from really becoming a serious contender in the highly competitive world market for low-cost golf rangefinders.
They recently announced the new version: The Series 3 Max golf rangefinder.
The Blue Tees Series 3 Box
When you open up the included carrying bag, you’ll see that it looks different from most other bags. It’s not just a regular bag; instead, it’s made out of rubber material with a magnetic closure.
The beautiful new case on the Series 3
A nice departure and helps to make this Blue Tees range finder stand out from some of its competitors. The only knock we would have is that the magnet is not extremely strong. Due to this, it feels like the clasp is more of a gimmick rather than something useful. But we haven’t had any concern about losing the rangefinder over it.
It looks nice.
The blue and white color scheme looks good, and the chrome embossed on the slide button is a nice touch.
The embossed logos on the switches look really good.
Despite not feeling as nice as some of the other options out there, we don’t think most people will be disappointed by the performance of the new Mizuno MP-1.
Blue Tees has improved its product line even further than before. Their new Series 3 is their best so far, and one of the better full-favored rangefinders we’ve used.
Blue Tees Series 3 Max Performance
We were disappointed by their previous products.
It worked well and gave good results quickly.
A look at the eyepiece on a Series 3 telescope.
After we finally got it out onto the course, it only took one hole or two before we realized that this was a very unique piece of equipment.
In Series 3, it feels more focused than ever before. Especially when you’ve disabled slope mode.
You get the distance needed (very) quickly and effortlessly.
With the most inexpensive rangefinders, the manufacturer may not have added any additional features beyond basic shooting functions. So they may have included shooting mode options for general use.
Some budget companies don’t offer any alternative modes, and they just get in the way by confusing you and leaving you thinking why the rangefinder isn’t working the way you want it to.
We haven’t experienced any issues with it not reaching the flag or becoming stuck on trees behind it.
It’s a good option for beginners who want something simple but effective.
It’s easy to turn the slope on and off, so it’s very easy to make tournaments compliant.
Extra Features of the Series 3 Max
It has an “auto-ambiance” display which makes its distance easier to read during any condition you’re in. The purpose of this is to help you play better golf regardless of the weather.
Most modern rangefinders offer a built-in laser ranging system (LRS) for measuring distances between objects.
We’re starting to see more and more devices with magnetic attachments on their rangefinders.
The magnetized back of the Series 3.
Sure enough, when we tried it out, it worked just fine. It didn’t budge even after riding over rough terrain.
Good Things
- Fast and accurate
- It has lots of features at an affordable price.
- An even better version than Series 1
Downsides
By now, you may be wondering “what’s the downside?”
There isn’t a catch per se, but there are a few things you should be aware of.
We found the biggest problem was the display and its quality.
It’s not terrible but it’s not good either.
After recently shooting with the beautiful viewfinder on the Nikon COOLSHOT PRO II STABILIZED camera, the display on the BLUE TEES camera felt lacking.
The optical quality feels similar to the Bushnell V5 but lacks some of the advanced features found in the Bushnell V5.
Honestly? Most folks probably won’t notice or mind. Especially if you haven’t used one of those more costly gadgets. However, if you do a comparison between them side by side, then the difference is quite obvious.
There are two downsides that come to mind. One is that some golf players feel like they need to have a high-end brand or product. Another is that there are people who think they’re better than others because they own a certain brand or product.
We still think of Blue Tees as a budget product. Despite upgrading its packaging, its case, and overall design, it still feels less refined than higher-end products from Bushnell, Nikon, or Leupold. There are some people who will treat it as if it were.
Conclusion
We think that the Blue Tees series 3 max rangefinder is a great value for money. The price of this product is very reasonable, and it has been designed to be durable and reliable.
