Understanding Rifle Scope Rings and Bases

What Size Scope Rings Do I Need?

Scope mounts are used to attach scopes to rifles. There are two types of scope mounts: base and ring. Base mounts are used to mount scopes onto barrels. Ring mounts are used to mount them onto receivers. A scope ring is a type of ring mount.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Rings and Bases are both types of attachment points for scopes. A scope ring attaches the scope directly to the rifle. A base mounts the scope to the rifle.
  • Bases are attachments used to attach scopes to rifles. There are different types of bases available, depending on what type of rifle you want to use. Some bases are made specifically for specific models of rifles, while others are universal.
  • Scope rings are used to attach scopes to firearms. Scope bases are used to attach scoped rifles to mounts. Scope rings are attached to the barrel of a rifle, while scope bases are attached to the mount. Scope rings are more important than scope bases because if a scope ring moves, the scope may fall off.

Scope rings and bases are like tire on a Porsche sports car if you want the Porsche to work at its full potential. You need to get the right scope ring and base for your gun. If you buy cheap scope rings and bases, your gun might not be accurate.

Rings and bases are the same thing. I was always confused when people came to the scope counter and spent an hour looking at and discussing scopes, chose a $1000 rifle scope and then bought a $15 set of mounts to attach it to a $1000 gun. Where’s the weak point in this equation? The cheap $15 mounts.

I’m not saying you have too spend money on your ring, but, at least get good ones. You’ll feel better when you’re done. Here are some other things to know about scope rings:

How to properly select rifle scope rings

You should buy a scope with a 1″ tube diameter if you want to be accurate. If you want to shoot fast, then get a scope with a 30mm or 34mm tube diameter.

Scope rings are used to mount scopes onto rifles. You’ll usually see them attached to the barrel of a rifle. Some people attach them to the receiver instead. Scope rings come in different sizes depending on what kind of scope you want to put on your rifle.

Single piece rings are generally considered to be better suited to precision applications because of the increased surface area making contact with receivers. Two piece rings tend to weigh less, but this extra weight isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Tactical rings are usually designed with law enforcement or government applications in mind.

A rifle scope comes in many different sizes, but the size or diameter of the objective lens usually determines how high the rings should be set. Don’t worry about this step because it’s not too difficult.

Low, Medium, Tall or High? This is a question I get asked quite often. There are three main types of rings used with scopes. Low, medium and high. These are measured from the bottom of the scope mount to the top of the scope. Low is usually around 1/4″ – 3/8″. Medium is usually about 5/16″ – 7/16″. And high is usually about 1/2″ – 11/32″. You should measure the rings before buying them.

You should use high-quality rings for your scope. You’ll want to make sure that you’re comfortable looking down the barrel of the gun while using the scope. This means that you should be mounting the scope as low as possible on the gun.

Scope Size

Scope rings must match the size of the scope. A 1 inch scope needs 1-inch scope rings and a 30 mm scope needs 30 mm scope rings. There are also other sizes available.

Ring Height

Scope rings come in different heights. The closer the scope to the bore, the less holdovers and hold unders. You should mount your scope as close to the bore as possible.

Style Bases and Rings

Leupold style bases are very sturdy and reliable. They are made out of steel and very sleek. You can assemble them without any tools.

Leupold mounting system is difficult to detach like other styles because the rings need to be separated before removing the scope.

Dovetail Bases and Rings

Dovetail rings are used in grooved receivers and the receivers are found in.22 rifles/airguns. These are made up of custom in the top of the weapon and run lengthwise along the gun. The cuts are deep enough for a dovetail ring to grip firmly on the weapon and also a firm connection between the claw of a dovetail ring.

Dovetail rings are rings that screw onto receivers. They are made out of metal and are usually used to attach scopes to rifles. There are many types of dovetail rings, but most of them are 3/8″ diameter. A 3/8″ dovetail ring is used to attach a scope to a rifle.

Few standard 22 rings can be called “one-inch tips off,” “1 inch 22 rings,” “One inch 3/8″ dovetails rings,” etc. These rings are used to make Weaver style bases. If you have a rifle that has a broad base, then this ring will give more area to grip.

All different designs you can find on extension rings. It allows us to make a shorter mounting distances between our scope rings. If we want to mount a short scoped on a weapon with the long receiver we may need extension rings.

Ring Height and Clearance Calculator

You need to calculate the distance from the target to be shot to determine whether or not the scope and ring combo you’re using will clear your barrel. This calculator takes into consideration the use of Butler Creek scope covers and the scope mount for traditional bolts. Add an extra inch to the length of the barrel if you’re using a tapered barrel.

A 20 MOA Cant of 6 inches between the Front of Your Scope and Mount Can Reduce Your Mount Height By 0.89mm.

Clearance: Mount Height + Ring Height – (Bell Diameter/2) – Cover Wrap 6.50mm (0.26 Inches).

The most common question I receive from new users is “What kind of night vision goggles should I buy?” There are many different types of night vision devices available, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, thermal imaging cameras are great at detecting heat signatures, but they don’t provide any information about objects or people. On the other hand, infrared light (IR) sensors can detect people and vehicles, but they aren’t able to see details like faces or license plates.

Optics

Thermal Optics have a 3 years warranty, LRF and ABL have a 2 years warranty, Accessories have a 1 year warranty. Recoil ratings up to 416 Barrett or 375 High-Velocity Rifle Ammunition. Charger takes a 2-amp charging unit and the supplied USB C Cable.

The average battery life and warranty of the battery in the Thor 4 is up to 16+ hours, depending on settings (16 hours if you use the default setting). The warranty on the battery is 6 years. The average lithium runtime with the Thor HD is 8-12 hours depending on settings. A battery pack is also available, called the AT&T Power Weapon Kit, which yields up to 22 hours of run time. If this kit is used, it’s still recommended to have a spare set of batteries in case something happens to your original set.

With all ports securely closed, the ThOR 4 weighs about 2.2 lbs. You can update your firmware by downloading the latest version using the provided USB cable. To zero your ThOR 4, you should use an ATN thermal target.

Is there a single piece QDM mount available for the XSight 4K and ThOR 4? Yes ATN has a single QDM mount available for retail. You can use 13 lb-inch on top ring Allen screws and 15 lb-inch bottom rail nuts. Will X-Trac work on ThOR 4? Yes

The ThOR-HD doesn’t have the required threads to connect an ABL. The ThOR 4 does come with a selection of 30mm tall rings and those will fit Picatinny rails, but the new design fits any standard 30mm rings, as long as you have enough clearance for the bell (which should be about 1/2″ or 12mm).

Thor 4 384 models have lower resolution and less image quality than 640 models. The difference is resolution and quality. The 384 models have shorter detection ranges because of the lower resolution and poorer image quality.

Thermal night vision is not needed. You can use thermal day or night. Scopes do not have a built-in range finder. ATN offers an auxiliary ballistic laser range finder that connects via bluetooth. This provides the capability of making first round hits on target using the bullet drop compensator.

You can’t take your thermal overseas without exporting paperwork. ATN doesn’t provide this service.

Night Vision

Night vision devices are electronic devices that increase our ability to see in low light conditions. There are several precautions when using night vision devices. First, the device should not be used during daylight hours. Second, the device should not point directly towards bright lights. Third, the device should not aim at bright lights.

Don’t touch the objective lens of the NVR!

Night vision works by gathering ambient light. Ambient light is made up of photons. Photons go into a photocathode that changes them to electrons. Electrons are then amplified to a great number through an electrical and a chemical process. The electrons then get flung against a phosphor screen that changes the electrons back into visible light. The image will now appear as a clear green-hue amplified version of the scene you were viewing.

Gen 1 night vision equipment uses image intensifiers. Image intensifiers amplify low level light into high levels of visible light. This allows you to see things that are invisible to your eyes. Because of this, people who use these devices need to be careful because they may accidentally startle or injure someone else. These devices also require batteries. When using these devices, make sure to turn them off before going to bed. Gen 2 night vision equipment uses a micro channel plate.

Micro channel plates increase the amount of light that is amplified. This means that the images produced by these devices are much brighter than those made by gen 1 devices. Gen 2 night vision devices are expensive but are necessary for professionals and military personnel who need to see in dark conditions.

Night vision devices (NVD) are used by soldiers to see in darkness. They use two lenses, one for seeing objects and another for blocking out light. Binoculars and goggles are also used by soldiers to see better in dark areas. They use two lenses as well. The first lens focuses the image onto the retina while the second blocks out ambient light.

Remember, that all night vision goggles have a minimal focusing distance. A minimal distance at which objects appear in full focus. The larger the object, the easier it is to see. If you’re seeing details, we call this recognition range. If you’re just trying to determine whether something is there or maybe you’ll just see movement, but won’t be able 100% determine who or whatever it is. This is detection range. Another variable, is lighting conditions.

The brighter the ambient light, the better and farther you will be able to distinguish between things. You can always see farther when the moon and stars are visible than if it is cloudy and dark. We typically say that you can tell the gender of someone or a dog or a deer at about 75-100 yards. However, if it is an open field and the moon is shining brightly, you can see a barn or a building 500 yards away.

Night vision devices are used by soldiers, police officers, hunters, hikers, and other people who want to see in the dark. These devices work by amplifying ambient light into visible wavelengths. Night vision devices are usually mounted on rifles or handguns. Some night vision devices also include infrared illumination.

Warranty for ATN products is 2 years. Power sources for most models are CR123A batteries or AA type batteries.

Lithium batteries last about 40 hours when used with analog night vision. You should always secure your night vision equipment by making sure the ports are closed or tightly secured. Your night vision equipment is waterproof.

You can’t send your night vision equipment overseas without proper documentation. ATN doesn’t provide this service for retail customers.

The mount ring should be chosen based on the lens diameter and focal length. For example, if you’re using a 50mm f1.8 prime lens, you’d want a 50mm f2.0 macro mount ring. If you’re using an 85mm f1.4 lens, you’ll want an 85mm f2.8 macro mount ring.

Scope Bases

A simple steel or aluminum platform that connects to a firearm’s receiver via clamps or screw and accepts scope rings into it. Scope rings are attached to the platform using clamps, screws, friction, or dovetails. Some firearms have bases built into them.

Style Bases

Aluminum rails are common for rifles. They are cheap and easy to get. They are usually made out of steel or aluminum. They are 7/8″ thick and come in many different sizes. Recoil slots run across them and are about.180″.

Dovetails

Dual dovetailed bases are the same as standard Leupolds, but without the windage adjustment screws. The rear ring is turned in instead of being held by the windage screws. This system does not provide the extra windage adjustments offered by the standard bases, but it is usually not important. You may prefer the clean lines and fewer parts that this system offers.

Scope Mounts

A mount is a ring and base combination that holds a barrel or stock onto a receiver. Most mounts come in two pieces, but some come in three pieces. Some mounts are made by companies like B-Square and NCSTAR. These mounts usually do not need any gunsmithing to install. Old guns may use this type of mount, making them easier to shoot and remove.

Conclusion and things to remember…

  • Before ordering scope rings for your rifle it’s necessary to determine the correct height.
  • Scope ring height: Scope rings come in different heights, it plays a role in how high the scope rides above the bore.
  • Setting a scope base is also an important step.
  • Choose the ring height by considering its relationship to the objective lens outside diameters, optical bell sizes, scope lengths, eye relief, bolt lifts, and barrel contours.
  • 42-45mm scopes will mostly use medium rings with standard contour barrels.
